February 2020 – On January 28, County Commission Chair Lesley J. “Les” Miller Jr. was joined by Tampa Mayor Jane Castor and Tampa Councilman Orlando Gudes in celebrating the kick-off of the Garden Steps project, funded by a grant from the Aetna Foundation and American Public Health Association.

Led by the MPO and Coalition of Community Gardens, the Garden Steps project is an initiative to expand access to fresh, healthy food in Tampa’s food desert neighborhoods through education, agriculture, and walk/bike connections. The event’s title, “Making Stone Soup,” recalls a folktale about famine-struck villagers sharing one ingredient from each household to create a pot of good food none could have produced individually. To further inspire the meeting participants, MPO staff members Michele Ogilvie and Wanda West brought their own homemade contributions, carrot ginger soup, and muffins!

As in the folktale, the problem of access to fresh food is less insurmountable when many community members work together. The meeting’s participants represented agencies and civic groups that might not be in touch under other circumstances, and they spoke about opportunities for expanding connections, opportunities for other community gardens, and next steps.

Middleton High School staff announced their readiness to coordinate their planned school garden with the new garden on 22nd street. Representatives from Tampa Family Health Center, a medical facility on 22nd Street, were supportive and are eager to collaborate with the Garden Steps plan. Mrs. Ogilvie spoke about the vision of the garden’s educational mission and the Healthy Street concept. Green Artery attendees talked about establishing gardens along the proposed pathways. The entire group was excited about working together to make the community the healthiest city.

Mayor Castor presented a Proclamation declaring January 27 – February 2 Tampa Community Health Week, with an emphasis on Community Gardens and Health. Other community partners included Lutz Community Church, Meacham Urban Farm, Temple Terrace Community Garden, Sweetwater Organic Community Farm, Seffner Community Garden, Green Artery, Whitwam Organics, Hillsborough County Extension Office, Connect & Propel Tampa Bay, Senior Connection Center, Hillsborough Soil & Water Conservation District, the Florida Department of Health, and REAL Building Consultants.

If we are to truly embrace the reality of ecological sustainability that recognizes the world as a living whole, we need to make the shift into a holistic consciousness, a consciousness that sees the whole in every part. Only then can we fully respond to the environmental crisis that is being caused by our present Western consciousness and the values it supports. Deep ecology requires not just a shift in values or ideology but a shift in consciousness.

About Us

Children are our future and developing an awareness of the importance of protecting our environment is important.  Youth projects supported by the Garden Club are: Camp Wekiva ( a camp owned and operated by FFGC  in Apopka for students in grades K-8), S.E.E.K. (Save the Earth’s Environment through Knowledge, a week-long conference for high school students),  a horticulture scholarship at Pinellas Technical College, school gardens in many public schools, a Junior Gardener Summer Nature Camp, and a Saturday Junior Gardener program during the school year at the Pioneer Settlement Village.

The Garden Club is also interested in our older citizens and has a Garden Therapy program, visiting Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities, and Rehab Centers and assisting the residents in planting potted plants to put in their rooms, conducting butterfly programs, and bringing a little cheer to the residents.

The Garden Club works with the City of St. Petersburg on the Green Thumb Festival in April at Walter Fuller Park.  The Garden Club sponsors a Flower Show with floral designs, horticulture, educational exhibits and creative crafts that are judged by accredited judges.  A Children’s Plant Fair is also a part of the Festival.

The Garden Club has formally dedicated a Blue Star Memorial.  It is available for the members and the public to have a brick commemorating a loved one.  Use the form below to order a brick.

A half-hour commute from Amsterdam, a piece of farmland is slated to become a new kind of neighborhood. Vertical farms, along with traditional fields and orchards surrounding homes, will supply food to people living there. Food waste will turn into fish feed for on-site aquaculture. Houses will filter rainwater, but won’t have driveways. A “village OS” tech platform will use AI to simultaneously manage systems for renewable energy, food production, water supply, and waste.

The 50-acre neighborhood, which will be nearly self-sufficient as it collects and stores water and energy, grows food, and processes much of its own waste, was initially planned for construction in 2017. The developers, called ReGen Villages, struggled with red tape–the area, on a piece of land that used to be underwater but was reclaimed in the 1960s when a seawall was constructed–has regulations that make it difficult for someone other than an individual homeowner to build on land that is mostly used for farming now. But after the project finally got government approval this month, it’s ready to take its next steps

I did research on this once.  The Florida hospital systems have nearly a dozen different names for a Hysterectomy and literally hundreds of excuses to complete them . . . birth control, stop hot flashes, reduce stress. . . etc. . .   I was stunned to find out how often these are done "routine"  (similar to prostate surgery) - - - Of course the resulting defective hormones and lymph leads to a defective immune systems = Creating Cancer!

But all the profit on cancer means they will never admit any "causes" for cancer except immediate toxins, like asbestos. However, the dentist will carefully cover your body with a protective lead blanket to x-ray your teeth for a millisecond, but every flight you take is like 10-50x that for hours of security, and those security folks are certainly all getting fried, with no liabilities, but major exploitive cancer monopoly profits. . .

While a law of Ecocide is an example of International Earth Law, there are examples of Earth Law happening at local levels too. Community Bills of Rights have been pioneered in the US by the Community Environmental Legal Defence Fund (CELDF) in recent years. They are local laws to elevate the rights of communities and nature above corporate rights, and they have proved effective in empowering communities to allow them to determine whether corporate developments, such as fracking, can proceed.

Community Bills of Rights are an example of bottom up legal systematic change. Where communities feel that their voices are not being heard Community Bills of Rights redirect rights, so that people and planet are put first. This has parallels in successful rights based movements like the abolitionists and the suffragettes.

In the UK, communities can be empowered in the same way as has happened under a Community Bill of Rights in the US. Community Chartering in the UK is now emerging. You can read more at communitychartering.org

In the UK, a Community Bill of Rights changes the legal framework in two fundamental ways:

it enshrines the right to local community self government by giving the local people the right to decide what happens in their communities; it recognize the rights of nature. today children may be assaulted, diseased, or killed by pervasive corporate drugs, junk-foods and beverages, perverted by mindless violence in multiple modes, deployed as dead-end labour with no benefits, and then dumped into a corporate future of debt enslavement and meaningless work. How could this increasing systematic abuse be publicly licensed at every level? What kind of society could turn a blind eye to its dominant institutions laying waste the lives of the young and humanity’s future itself?



Bakan’s classic film and book,The Corporation has revealed step by step the “corporation as psychopath”.




Bakan reports copious findings on Big Pharma buying doctors with favours, planting articles in name journals, inventing child illnesses to prescribe medications to, and drugging the young from infancy on with the unsafe substances they push (pp. 65-114). Along with the corporate invasion of children’s healthcare goes the invasion of public education (pp. 139-71, 245-56). Administrators with now corporate executive salaries for no educational function collaborate with the agenda, and mechanical testing devices closed to independent academic examination are the Trojan horse for a mass lock-step of miseducation (pp. 140-62). Bakan is aware that the whole trend of corporatization of the classroom and educational institutions “undermines the role of education in promoting critical thought and intelligent reflection” (p. 47). Indeed it wars against them in principle. For reasoning and critical research require learners to address problems independently of corporate profits and to penetrate behind market-conditioned beliefs. Big-business demands the opposite. It maximizes money returns as its first and final principle of thought and judgement, and selects against any truth or knowledge conflicting with this goal.





Corporate child abuse, in short, far surpasses all other forms of child abuse put together. But in a world where both parents are at work to survive and big money always wins elections, the life interests of children are bullied out of view. “Corporations [are] large, powerful and dominating institutions”, Bakan summarizes, “deliberately programmed to exploit and neglect others in pursuit of wealth for themselves” (p. 175).




So what is the resolution? Bakan emphasizes the pre-cautionary principle and laws against clear harms to the young. He emphasizes “values” and “teaching what is good for them and what is not” (pp. 49-50). Yet we have no principled criterion of either. They are self-evident once seen. The good for children is whatever enables life capacities to coherently grow, and the bad is whatever disables them. Corporate dominion goes the opposite direction. Thus unfitness, obesity, depression, egoic fantasies, aggressive violence, and aimlessness increase the more its profitable child abuse runs out of control. This is the heart of our disorder. Public regulation of corporations by tested life-capacity standards is the solution.

A landmark study on the topic by Donald Davis and his team of researchers from the University of Texas (UT) at Austin’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was published in December 2004 in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. They studied U.S. Department of Agriculture nutritional data from both 1950 and 1999 for 43 different vegetables and fruits, finding “reliable declines” in the amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and vitamin C over the past half century. Davis and his colleagues chalk up this declining nutritional content to the preponderance of agricultural practices designed to improve traits (size, growth rate, pest resistance) other than nutrition.

Recent studies of historical nutrient content data for fruits and vegetables spanning 50 to 70 years show apparent median declines of 5% to 40% or more in minerals, vitamins, and protein in groups of foods, especially in vegetables

Acknowledging assessment difficulties, since the 1850s, wheats have declined in Mg concentration 7–29 %; USA and English vegetables’ Mg declined 15–23 %, 1930s to 1980s. The nadir of USA food Mg supply in 1968 coincides with the USA peak in CVD mortality. As humans transition from “traditional” to modern processed food diets, Mg intake declines.
