Fostering Sustainable Behavior Listserv

We have launched a National Zero Waste Council in Canada focused on advancing waste prevention and reduction. The Council has created a website (nzwc.ca) to share resources, where municipalities, businesses and not for profits can use actual campaign materials or strategies that have had results. I'm looking for social marketing programs focused specifically on waste reduction (not recycling) in the past 5 years. Does anyone have anything to share, or know of programs out there? (This is not limited to Canadian programs.)

Thanks

AquaSprouts's Stylish Aquaponic Garden

AquaSprouts's Stylish Aquaponic Garden Lets You Grow Fresh Veggies on Your Kitchen Counter | Inhabitat - Sustainable Design Innovation, Eco Architecture, Green Building: If you like the idea of aquaponics but aren’t sure how to get started, you’re in luck: AquaSprouts

AquaSprouts is the ultimate countertop garden for any living space, and
the best part is that it maintains itself: you don’t have to clean it
because the fish’s secretions—which would ordinarily accumulate on the
inside of the glass tank—are instead absorbed as food by the plants
growing above. The bacteria in the fish poop acts as a fertilizer, so
when the plants suck up water from the tank, they’re also nourished
rather heartily. As part of this process, the plants clean the water for
the fish, creating a sustainable, self-contained ecosystem that just
happens to include delicious edibles for you to enjoy.

USF Patel College of Global Sustainability

Wow, what an awesome experience this is, as I Teach at the College of Global Sustainability

My first child is now a newly married public school teacher, and the second is expected to complete his Architecture MS within the year. Both children became USF alumni at age 5. They began at the
USF child center to become Honor Roll students throughout their primary schooling. As the Project Director for STARS USA Inc. our lessons together were all "experiential project based learning." Project-Based Instruction was how we did dishes, bike rides, art shows, and boy scouts in our home. Yes, both my son and daughter were boy scouts with me!

Food, Farming and Climate Change: It’s Bigger than Everything Else | Common Dreams | Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

Food, Farming and Climate Change: It’s Bigger than Everything Else | Common Dreams | Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community: Industrial agriculture is a key driver in the generation of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, heavy machinery, monocultures, land change, deforestation, refrigeration, waste and transportation are all part of a food system that generates significant emissions and contributes greatly to global climate change. Industrial agricultural practices, from Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) to synthetic fertilizer-intensive corn and soy monocultures, genetically modified to tolerate huge amounts of herbicide, not only contribute considerable amounts of GHGs, but also underpin an inequitable and unhealthy global food system. Modern conventional agriculture is a fossil fuel-based, energy-intensive industry that is aligned with biotech, trade and energy interests, versus farmer and consumers priorities.

Tax on Junk Food, Eliminates Sales Tax on Fruit and Vegetables

Now we're talking. . . stop the poison through the money trail!
Navajo Nation Starts Tax on Junk Food, Eliminates Sales Tax on Fruit and Vegetables:

The Navajo Nation has become the first area in the country to approve a tax on junk food, pairing it with the elimination of sales tax on fruits and vegetables to try to compel people to eat healthier.

The Nation comprises an area of over 27,000 square miles, across the states of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Bags of chips and Hot Cheetos, among other items such as sweetened beverages and fried foods labeled as junk food, will cost 2 percent more under the tax. Meanwhile, the 5 percent sales tax won’t apply to fresh fruits and vegetables.

The tax was approved by the Nation to try to combat a health crisis—an estimated 100,000 of the tribe’s 300,000 members either have Type-2 diabetes or are pre-diabetic.

rooster news

"John Starnes Jr."

I waited over a week to be sure this is true, at least for THIS rooster of mine after years of caring for him and one before him (I ate the six others).....at sundown I take him out of the hen house and close it, then put him in a dog travel cage in the garden shed, cover the cage with a big piece of cloth then shut the door to prevent my neighbors from being woken up. I let him out each morning around 11. This has worked great for years now and I've shared this with people, including neighbors wondering why no morning crows here. But over a week ago I accidentally forgot to cover the door of the cage with the fabric...and now, I guess because of some sunlight entering his cage, he barely crows at all! When the empty lot next door soon sports a new house with new neighbors after being empty for years, this should greatly reduce even his crows suppressed by the shed. A lot of us want a rooster so as to make more chickens for meat and eggs but regret it when a "hen" turns out to be a rooster, so I wanted to share this new angle on suburban rooster keeping.
