Nature a Topic of Global Conversation

Make Rights of Nature a Topic of Global Conversation: If we want to build a just, thriving, and sustainable world, we need to shift to the fact that Nature sustains all life, including ours, and must be free to continue doing so.  The Rights of Nature is an innovative legal concept that could powerfully shift our legal, economic, and intellectual relationship to each other. It is an important tool for communities to protect the air, water, and our well-being.

LCA Harmonization

LCA Harmonization

The LCA Harmonization project systematically reviewed estimates of life cycle GHG emissions from electricity generation technologies published between 1970 and 2010. LCAs consider emissions from all stages in the life cycle of an electricity generation technology, from component manufacturing, to operation of the generation facility to its decommissioning, and including acquisition, processing and transport of any required fuels. For selected technologies, a meta-analytical procedure called "harmonization" was applied to adjust estimates so that they were methodologically more consistent and therefore more comparable. This was done to reduce variability and clarify central tendency in the estimate of life cycle GHG emissions to that more robust decisions can be made and other analyses relying on such estimates can be strengthened.

This application (app) allows for customized visualization of summary statistics and the underlying published estimates collected for each technology, as well as companion harmonized estimates. Data selected and their associated reference citations can be downloaded.

For more information on LCA, this project, its methods and results see this series of web pages. Peer-reviewed publications supporting the results presented here are linked from those web pages.

Instructions

There are three areas of the LCA Harmonization app:

•Filters in the Left Column - this displays a hierarchical structure of the data and allows you to choose what data you would like to see. For example, you can compare all Bio-Power data (by selecting Bio-Power), versus specifially Bio-Power using Co-Firing, versus Nuclear BWR (Boiling Water Reactor). If you hover the mouse over the terms, a tooltip will appear with the full name of the term.

•Tabs - these allow you to select how you'd like the selected data to be displayed. You can choose charts, a table of all the data used to create the charts (ie the subset of the entire set of data based on your filter selections).

•Main Area - the main area of the app that displays the results based on your selections.

Farm Made: A Guide to On-Farm Processing for Organic Producers
A publication from the Kerr Center that contains information about how organic management can bring many benefits to the farm. One of these is better net income. A major contributing factor to an improved bottom line is the premium that organic commands in most markets. However, as production increases and organic products go mainstream, premiums are likely to decline, and organic farmers are likely to face the same economic pressures as their conventional neighbors. One way to avert this is by adding value to organic crops through on-farm organic processing.

This publication also contains an overview and four example enterprises; Sorghum Syrup; Packaged Fresh Salad Greens; Jams, Jellies, and Spreads; and Table Eggs.

NOAA Fisheries Service Northeast Regional Office - Aquaculture

As the nation's oceans agency, NOAA plans to take a thorough approach to sustainable aquaculture that will create employment and business opportunities in coastal communities; provide safe, sustainable seafood; and complement NOAA's comprehensive strategy for maintaining healthy and productive marine populations, species, and ecosystems and vibrant coastal communities.
NOAA and the Department of Commerce have finalized draft national aquaculture policies that support sustainable marine aquaculture in the United States. The intent of the policies is to guide Commerce and NOAA's actions and decisions on aquaculture and to provide a national approach for supporting sustainable aquaculture. Please go to the link to read the the final policies, view the press release, or read the public comments.

The manual includes three major sections: A Code of Conduct; A BMP section with a discussion of issues and suggested BMP statements for specific farm operations; and a shellfish farm template with suggestions for farm-level BMP elements and a sample farm management plan. Each section also has a discussion of an issue important for shellfish farmers to address and offers with suggested BMP statements that an individual farm may wish to adopt as is or modify for incorporation into their farm BMP.
